book projects, thoughts are things

thoughts are things

Today was a funny silly day…the kind of day you go through emotions and ponder life. I did and know that elements must change as nature always does. Out with the old and in with the NEW ever changing lovely ways of sweet lovable nature. Only sometimes love hurts, but that’s just the way it must be…honestly brutal. Or is it the other way around?

I sat and wondered about life–my life and my circumstances. Inside I thought why oh why does it take so long for a dream to surface. Others make it seem so easy walking along with the wind in their hair without so much as a care. Others struggle to hold on and the wind knocks them down again and again but the love that love never gives up. I witnessed this while watching Jane Eyre. I feel this as all the artists describe and share their latest collaborations. This very word Tantrum makes sense…when you have one, well nothing could spell out the truth so clearly as a tantrum.

I came upon the sketches I drew 5 minute style:

IMAG0044

My favorite is the top right one. Roots sticking out, sideways and all, branches broken, and yet still there is that little plant… a life. That’s where the tantrum happens. We cry and revolt against the status quote because we can not bear to be without what we truly want. No matter what we mustn’t let go. We must always feel–feel and revolt with our IMAGINATION, CURIOSITY AND ACTIONS. We can’t let go what simply is and therefore never die…

all that led to my latest Instagram postIMAG0036

yeah today was a silly day but as my neighbor said, “I can’t complain.” I sure can’t. These are the final sketches for my wise trees book . We shall see. Continue reading “thoughts are things”

Life is much too short to be vague. I have been thinking about this ALOT. I love my life and I love all the possibilities that I think up. I can create my art and share it with the world. Those who love will.  Those who don’t, well I’ll love.  I’ll create the kind of art that I was born to create. I mean why in the world would I not want to. Why in the world would I allow someone to define me? I define me. I choose to show up. Am I really?  There’s that world vague again. That’s just it when I am loving I’m not vague. Sure there are moments but in the grand scheme of life… no.

These beautiful red-velvet hearts are a new creation that I recently added to my shop. I felt a little overwhelmed with the wise trees book and took a little break…a few days. I’m almost done and have started a drawing class…got to record notes on this tempera paint layering technique.

tree with oil pastels

Oh yeah this is another tree for the WISE TREES Book. I  have the process down and just about finished with the pesky business of creating digital files all ready to create the first draw of the entire book. Feels good and come to think of it, this tree sums up the experience. To create this book I have to bare down to ME, my imagination and let curiosity run wild. Or is it the other way around?

Notes

  • crayola oil pastels.
  • watercolor paint for the leaves.
  • combination of tan and brown. Mix in a little of each color with a little brown to create  unified tones throughout.
  • layered with light and then dark. Hey this is becoming a pattern…a style.
  •  love this idea and this just seems to be illuminating and radiates the intended message.
  • Note to self…just paint and play because that’s when the magic happens.

Imagine all the impossibilities that are possible.

Strong roots

I painted this tree as I uttered the words, “I’m going for it.” I went for it and this happened. Literally this experience and my art exploration really, ties in to a book about a bird who follows her curiosity. She had some idea…some plan.  Part of following your curiosity means you follow your ideas. I’m working on allowing  that full faith  experience to just run and play like a 1st grader when it’s recess time. That’s probably  the most important.

Something didn’t feel right about the design. Others on instagram liked the tree but I felt it wasn’t right so  I painted another.

notes:

  • adding a little yellow- bright yellow at that- and mixing it with brown makes the perfect sun kissed yellow for the tree trunk.
  • for the trunk I  use a combination of dry brush and wet to wet to get awesome texture
  • The more I play the more I realize that certain color and other elements show up and call themselves my style.
  • I then took and angled brush and I dabbed here and there, then layered with dark and light tones.
  • speaking of my style…this project has be learning and discovering that maybe there’s a place for me in the children’s picture book illustrations.

The trees are almost done and soon I’ll be working on layout. I’m so excited! Yeah I will be giving away some awesome zip bags to kick off my threadless shop.

Wise Trees Indeed

Wise trees book

So I didn’t make my Read Across America deadline BUT I was sick and still am. I am slowly recovering and something AMAZING happened. After a long LONG  week I got out my paint brushes and painted. With each stroke I felt this charge and painted an awesome tree.

Tree Notes:

  • observe a tree
  • wait a few days and recreate it from memory
  • use the shape of size 10 brush to create the leaf shapes
  • using brown and yellow watercolor for the trunk makes the perfect brown
  • use tempera paint and add the paint in layers going from light to dark

Afterward I reflected on how I felt and literally jumped up like a kid who’s just been told he’s going to Disneyland  That’s how I know that I can’t give this art up. Art is in my blood. It just is. I can’t believe how easy it was to create this beautiful tree. Four trees to go, and I will be ready to scan all of them and start putting the book together . There I go again with a smile.  I see every page and with a deep breath and a smile I know it’s going to be awesome!

Imagine all the impossibilities that are possible.

As an artist there’s this whole idea of seeking fame and dealing with the people who tell you to get a real job. You even doubt yourself!  Why shouldn’t they. I don’t know about fame but to earn a living doing what I love and doing it my way is WELL that’s my living dream.

I had to face a terrible truth in my heart. I had to realize that my PRESENT for a long time was filled with doubt. I had the desire but deep down I didn’t have faith in my art. Yes I loved my ideas and I wished but did I LIVE IN THE PRESENT? Did all of my daily to-dos and thoughts dedicate themselves to this desire? No.

All of the ones who are living the dream ALWAYS BELIEVED and its as the words of the great Muhammad Ali said,  “I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.” He also said, “If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it—then I can achieve it.”

The present may be a certain way but you must see the present as it is truly meant to be. The present is a gift! What you choose to think of it makes all the difference. Your present actions influence your behavior.

Imagine all the impossibilities that are possible.

Live your story

IMAG0533[1]

The greatest love story can be found within the pages of a novel, movie or one’s heart. Most including myself forget that the greatest hopeless love begins with self. I wrote this poem and it was my hope to have it ready for Valentine’s Day. It was BUT not like I wanted. I kept reinventing the wheel expecting an awesome layout and ended up more in love with the first design. This design feels right and once I change a few words it will be awesome. I can turn this awesome poem into a picture book!! Why then, do I keep reinventing perfection? Doubt I guess, but doubt in terms of what others will think.

IMAG0367[1]

I realize that in a real love story there is no doubt and certainly no perfection.  Okay there may be doubt but take away all of the outside junk and there isn’t any doubt.  It’s all the outside junk that fools us. It’s True!  I love this poem and this poem loves me. I can’t seem to stop writing it and thinking of ways to express how it makes me feel.

I wrote this poem for myself but I smile in hopes of all the eyes who’ll read it.

In the words of a wise man Feck Perfection! I just want to write this on a wall someplace for all to read it. I’m dreaming of an old building that needs new character.

The old design–the one my heart seeks the most.  I love the color and texture. Oh the words highlighted…what a great example of how love just happens.

Make a note to test various markers and I’m gonna try this one more time…however many it takes.

Oh right– back to painting trees for the wise tree book.

What is mnemonic? I say it’s different and unique.  SO it’s a pattern be it a theme, color or ideas put together. Every artist dreams of the moment when one says,” I saw your work the other day and didn’t see a name but I knew it was you! That kind of art is unmistakable. Ha I think of a moment–an argument over a song and the unexpected artist who created it. I guess that’s Mnemonic too!  The point is to create something that people remember. Create the kind of information that people remember and resonate with.  The trouble is you can only do that by forgetting this and everything except what you want to say, and how you want to say it.

Kraft paper brush Tree

papertreeTechnique inspired by an awesome painter. He painted with newspaper and I painted with a kraft paper roll.  This was a powerful lesson on exploring your creativity. Now I have one more tree for the Wise Trees book. Lots of trees and soon will come the time to scan them and create a story book layout…SO GLAD I FOUND Affinity Photo! That’s all thanks to an Instagram friend!

Painting trees with…

watercolor, tempera and artist tape.

Treasure Tree Hill

Sometimes life can be overwhelming…okay ALOT.   I could be a big worry wart and make myself sick… but where would I be?  I’d be lost. If I’m lost then how can I be my best? I’ve always had a creative imagination. My best is embracing new ideas even if it means I leave the most comfortable place. The weird AMAZINGNESS is that art gives me comfort.  Ideas excite me and fill my days with pizzazz.

Here’s what I mean. This blogger had an amazing idea to paint trees using artist tape. She painted a winter scene.  I had to try this, only I painted a scene for my book.

Step 1 apply artist tape on paper. This was fun because it’s a new idea!

IMG_20171031_184821_947[1]

I had an idea to explore different mixed media techniques. My plan was simple and beautiful. Sure takes the pressure off of learning to draw. I am learning to draw BUT now I’m drawing my way. This feels Sooo much better. As I look at this, I realize that I want a more organic feel.

IMAG0271[1]

Step 2. I used a paint brush to paint the background. I was thinking lovely shades of analogous color. David and Goliath showed up. I had two options. I could continue to work or start over. I am after all creative right?  I kept on mixing no matter what. I had his idea to use yellow tempera paint. I applied paint with a dab motion. Oh and I used the contrast technique I learned. I mixed in a little red with green to create contrasting shades. Afer all was said and done, I noted a Big something. I didn’t leave space around the small trees for perspective. I guess this still looks okay. I had painted Treasure Tree Hill…this wonderful place where Dimples tests his flyer because he wants to fly, even though dogs don’t fly.

If a first you don’t succeed try again. I referenced an awesome picture I found online….

but I painted Treasure Tree Hill.

Treasure Tree Hill

I used salt to give the hill texture.  I even painted the lopsided lollipop tree. I need to paint Dimples of course. I’ve sketched him but not sure I want to mess up what I’ve done so far.  I’m so happy with this idea. I want to sell limited edition tree theme art prints. Wonder what my fans think.
