This journal belongs to Mireya.
I fill this journal with curiosity and imagination. This is a creative book for all the thinks I think up including poems, pictures books and all the side projects I work on. I LOVE ART and this is the process of all my WONDERFUL ideas. I encourage all readers to create and love with me. This is my story and in telling mine maybe I can inspire others to tell their own story.
Two words: Tempera paint and spoon fork
…which led to colorful flowers! Now it’s a zip bag in my threadless shop. Soon to be featured in a book.
Why Art?… Art is me, ALWAYS has been and always will be. It’s a LOVE STORY. As a kid I loved paint by number books, finger painting, markers and crayons. In high school I’d get bored in class and draw in the page margins I took a ceramics class and my class project was to write a chapter book. In college I majored in Marketing and studied Design, Advertising, Consumer Behavior and Western Renaissance Art. I’ve always been creative, curious and imaginative. I stopped physically creating art for a while but it lingered and stayed very much alive.
…lingered and stayed very much alive?
I’ve always been in love with color, and words. One day I sat in my backyard with my dog and this bee story happened. This was the beginning of my book Ana Bee and George Bird. I wrote it down and needed answers. That led to learning illustrator and photoshop and hand lettering. I love hand lettering. Then I came across a crayola educational watercolor palette and all these childhood memories. I love to paint!
Describe your process?
I’m curious about everything. I’m a THINKER and obsessed with color and nature. My favorites are monotone shades. I really love this 3 tier cake that’s amazing tones of blue. I love vintage lettering especially the block lettering that knows no rules. I love the lettering you’d see on a vintage post card. It’s simple writing but behind it are all the emotions the writer feels. I implicitly draw hearts, use ordinary objects to paint. I just have fun with what I love. I’m still growing. I don’t seek perfection. I create art like an unmistakable song and let color tell the story…yeah that’s good.
What’s your motto?
LOVE. Walt Disney said,” That’s the trouble with the world, too many people grow up. Love leads to play and play leads to ideas. Ideas, well if you have the courage to simply be, extraordinary will happen.
I’m inspired by…
The radical James Victore. He’ll probably say it’s not that he’s radical but himself. I love Frida Kahlo. Her life is right there on the canvas. It’s so fascinating to learn how each artist expresses what they feel. Raphael’s School of Athens is a reminder of our wonderful world of ideas. Eric Carle’s collage art is amazing! The fact that his genius art for the Hungry Caterpillar came about from punching holes in a paper is crazy. There are tons more..I’m inspired by the notion that art comes from anywhere and anyplace. I get obsessed with songs. I want to know who wrote them and why. I Just read about the artist Tracy Emin. She said, “If I was to make art, it couldn’t be about the f***** picture, it had to be about where it was really coming from.” Wow! The more I surround myself with artists, the more I identify with them.
Something fun and interesting about me…
I love music! I used to sing when I was a kid. I would imagine a big audience. Nothing to do with fame but to see others smile and dance. I sing with paint. My poems need walls. I write songs. I’d like to learn the entire choreography to the Thriller song.–wait that’s more than something.
Something interesting (weird) about me…
I would always tilt my head-get lost in thoughts…people would ask what I’m thinking about. They still ask. (laughs) I had this habit of asking why. I still do! Most teachers didn’t appreciate that. I’ve always had this obsession with the why and process of what fascinates me. Sometimes it’s what doesn’t. I paint my thoughts and curiosity and that’s what being a painter who writes words and drawings makes sense.
